Two Bobcat E35 listings can both say “mini excavator” and give you very different quotes for a drainage or hardscape job. The difference may be the arm, the bucket or the hours on the undercarriage. Start with the depth and reach of a job you actually do. Then work backward to the exact Bobcat configuration and delivered price.
An E35 model name leaves out the arm
Bobcat’s U.S. specifications for the 24.8-horsepower E35 list 121.2 inches of maximum dig depth for the base machine, 133 inches for the long arm and 153.2 inches for the extendable arm. The listed operating weights are 7,659, 8,362 and 8,590 pounds respectively. Those are different configurations in one current family. A used E35 from another model year can have a different engine, weight or reach.
Write down what matters for your work: trench depth, working radius, spoil placement, truck loading height and room behind the machine. The published maximum depth describes one part of the machine’s digging envelope. Ask the seller for the chart for the specific serial number and arm. If you plan to place boulders, ask for the lift chart for the distance and height involved.
Read the listings like equipment packages
Confident Equipment advertised a 2015 E35 at $32,500 with 2,824 hours. Its description includes two buckets, a hydraulic thumb and an auger head. Crownstone Equipment listed a 2017 E35 at $41,900 with 1,650 hours, an extendable arm, a thumb and an 18-inch trenching bucket. The difference in asking price is $9,400, but the machines do not come with the same kit.
For a fence crew, the auger head may save buying another implement. For a drainage crew, the longer reach or different bucket may matter more. Ask what transfers with the machine, whether the pin sizes and coupler match your current buckets, and what each missing attachment costs on its own. Compare the combined quote after delivery and inspection.
Ask for pin, track and service evidence
Ask the seller to show bucket linkage and coupler wear, both track frames, sprockets and any recent hydraulic repairs. Request a cold-start and warm-operation demonstration by the seller or technician. Have an independent equipment mechanic inspect a used excavator when the seller’s claims or a major repair could change the deal.
Review the trailer separately. Get the configured transport weight including the coupler, bucket and attachments you will carry. Compare it with the documented capacities for your complete transport setup. If the existing setup cannot carry the package, get a transport quote before treating the machine as a replacement for rental.
How many rental days justify ownership?
Suppose six days of compact-excavator rental are about to turn into a recurring monthly expense. Count only the days you genuinely expect to replace. Divide the expected fixed ownership cost by the rental cost avoided per day after subtracting the variable cost of operating your own machine. The result is the minimum whole number of rental days you need to replace under those assumptions.
When you have a seller quote, send the year, serial number, arm, attachments and intended use with your financing request. Separating the base machine from freight and accessories gives the broker a clearer picture to review. The selling dealer confirms availability. A lender makes the financing decision.
