Forestry Mulchers for Sale: Head, Carrier, or Complete Machine?

Compare a $24,500 attachment with a $124,500 tracked mulcher, verify hydraulic fit, and estimate the billed clearing days needed to carry the purchase.

A forestry mulcher listed at $24,500 and one at $124,500 can both be priced correctly. One seller is offering a cutting head that needs a carrier. The other is selling a tracked machine with the head installed. Start with what your company already owns, then price what it will take to get the exact setup to the job.

Three ways to buy a clearing setup

An attachment can work for a crew that already owns a suitable carrier and can spare it for clearing work. Verify the match by model and serial number. A quick-attach plate that fits says nothing about hydraulic flow, pressure, cooling, electrical controls, or the tools and guarding the manufacturer requires.

A carrier-and-head package gives you one transaction but potentially two service histories. Get separate identifiers and hour readings wherever available. A purpose-built tracked mulcher gives a dedicated crew another way to buy. Compare transport weight, parts support, and the trailer or hauling service you will use. A carrier committed to a clearing job also cannot move material on another job that day.

Read the hydraulic numbers before you buy a head

FAE’s sheet for the UML/SSL/BL lists 75–135 hp and 32–53 gallons per minute for the named VT and SONIC motor configurations. Those figures belong to that product family. Do not apply them to every FAE head or to a used unit identified only as “high flow.” Ask the carrier dealer to confirm the serial-matched setup in writing, including operating pressure and case-drain requirements.

Ask to see the head and carrier together if the seller advertises a package. Have a qualified technician inspect rotor and tooth pockets, mounts, lines, shielding, cooling system, and undercarriage. Ask what a full tooth replacement costs locally and whether the seller has invoices for major repairs.

If you want a skid steer forestry mulcher

Ask whether the ad is selling a skid steer with a forestry package, a compatible mulching head by itself, or both ready to work. Write down the carrier make, model, year, rated hydraulic flow and pressure, and the head’s exact model and motor. A seller’s phrase “fits high-flow skid steers” is not a serial-specific fit check. If the head and carrier come from different sellers, obtain itemized quotes and confirm who will fit, test and service the combination.

Separate attachment money from complete-machine money

Tyler Rental advertised a used 2020 FAE UML/SSL-150VT attachment in Washington for $24,500. In South Carolina, 4M Iron listed a 2020 Fecon FTX150 tracked mulcher for $124,500 with 2,000 hours, a head, and a rear winch. Neither asking price tells you what your machine is worth or whether you can buy the unit today. Each tells you which questions belong in your quote.

For an attachment, add installation, any approved guarding and hydraulic work, teeth, shipping, and downtime on the carrier. For a dedicated machine, add hauling, initial service, undercarriage reserve, and the cost of standing it down between jobs. Ask the seller to itemize the head and carrier before you compare financing.

Measure booked days before you finance

Start with clearing days that customers have booked or historically paid for. Exclude travel days you cannot bill and weather days when you cannot work. If a clearing day brings in $1,800 and leaves $800 after labor, diesel, wear, and hauling, three paid days cover $2,400 in monthly machine and other fixed costs. Repeat with the figures from a slow month.

Send the complete setup for review

The financing request should identify whether you need the head only, a carrier and head, or a purpose-built machine. Provide both serial numbers when available, the written quote, any trade-in, and your target purchase date. If you already own the carrier, include its model so the team can understand the transaction. The brokerage reviews potential financing options. The lender makes the credit decision.
